Ecological guardian, new favorite in engineering: What is the magic of welded gabion mesh?

Nov 07, 2024

Welded gabion, also known as welded gabion or welded mesh cage, is an ecological grid structure made of high-quality steel wires precisely welded by automated mechanical equipment. It combines the advantages of traditional gabion, and has been improved and innovated on this basis. It is widely used in civil engineering, water conservancy engineering, landscaping and other fields.

This article will comprehensively introduce the definition, structure, advantages, application fields and installation methods of welded gabion, aiming to provide readers with a detailed overview of welded gabion.

Structure and manufacturing process of welded gabion

1. Manufacturing materials
Welded gabion mainly uses high-quality low-carbon steel wire as raw material, which has the characteristics of high strength and high corrosion resistance. In order to further improve its durability and corrosion resistance, the surface of the steel wire is usually treated with electrogalvanizing, hot-dip galvanizing, PVC coating, dipping or Galfan (zinc-aluminum alloy).

2. Manufacturing process
- Raw material preparation: Select high-quality low-carbon steel wire that meets the standards and perform surface treatment.
- Welding and forming: Through automated mechanical equipment, the steel wire is welded according to a certain grid spacing to form a mesh.
- Assembling into a cage: The welded mesh is cut into the corresponding size according to the design requirements, and the mesh is assembled into a box or mesh bag shape through spiral binding wire or special buckles.
- Surface treatment: The assembled gabion mesh is subjected to final surface treatment, such as plastic coating, plastic dipping, etc., to enhance its corrosion resistance and aesthetics.

3. Product specifications
Common specifications include:
- Mesh size: 5×7cm, 5×10cm, etc., and the specific size can be customized according to customer requirements.
- Wire diameter: 2.4mm to 4.0mm, which affects the strength and rigidity of the product.
- Cage size: Common sizes are 0.5×0.5×1m, 1×1×1m, 2×1×1m, etc., and can also be customized according to actual needs.

Advantages:

1. Strong firmness
The welded gabion is welded with high-quality steel wire and has high tensile strength and durability. After strict welding process, the welding point is firm and not easy to fall off or crack.

2. Good flexibility
Although the welded gabion has high strength, its structure is flexible and can adapt to various complex terrains and landforms. When subjected to external forces, it can produce slight deformation to absorb energy, thereby protecting the internal structure from damage.

3. Strong water permeability
The mesh design of the welded gabion is reasonable, which can allow water to pass freely and prevent soil particles from being lost. This helps to maintain the stability and ecological balance of the slope.

4. Good integrity
The welded gabion is connected by tying or snapping to form an integral structure with good stability and impact resistance. It is not easy to fall apart or collapse even when it is partially damaged.

5. Strong corrosion resistance
The welded gabion after surface treatment has strong corrosion resistance and can be used for a long time in harsh environmental conditions without rusting or rotting. Especially for products treated with Galfan, the corrosion resistance is significantly improved.
6. Simple and fast construction
The welded gabion mesh is light in weight and easy to assemble, so it can be quickly installed and filled at the construction site. This not only shortens the construction period but also reduces the construction cost. At the same time, due to its regular, neat and beautiful structure, it also has a certain decorative effect.
7. Low cost
Compared with other slope protection materials, the cost of welded gabion mesh is relatively low and easy to obtain and maintain. This makes it one of the preferred slope protection materials in many engineering projects.
