What are Chicken Fences Made of?

Feb 16, 2023

Black PVC-coated galvanized steel or black polypropylene plastic are the most common materials used to make chicken wire fencing. Here are some details on how chicken fences are made.

Woven structures
Metal chicken wire fencing comes in a range of thicknesses and strengths with small to large opening sizes. It is possible to weave or weld this wire fencing. The woven wire can be knotted like conventional field fencing or twisted like conventional hexagonal wire after being bent into shape by a machine (chicken wire). The breaking strength of metal chicken fences ranges from over 2,000 pounds per square foot for some welded wire types to 800 pounds for woven wire hex (chicken wire) varieties.

Types of Coatings
Polypropylene plastic chicken fence: The breaking strength of the opening size, which ranges from 400 pounds per square foot to 1400 pounds per square foot, can be used as a physical barrier. The majority of animals can be repelled by stronger variations of this poly chicken fence while moving at any speed.

Metal chicken fences may be simply galvanized, painted black, or coated with black vinyl after being galvanized. Galvanizing can be done either before weaving or welding or after weaving or welding (welded joints are also covered with zinc for the best rust resistance when galvanized after welding/weaving). The black polypropylene chicken fence is less noticeable than the black vinyl coated version of this metal chicken fence. It is not as rust-resistant as polypropylene, but depending on the coating, it can last for five to twenty-five years.

Sizes
The opening sizes of some of the more popular knotted metal animal fences are graded from smaller (2"x4") at the bottom to larger (4"), at the top. This and other wire fences with large openings can catch animals that run into them and harm or kill them. Animals are much less likely to be harmed by wire chicken fences with openings of two inches or less, and they are just as effective. At the base of a poly chicken fence, 1"x1" or smaller metal can also be used as a chewing barrier or rodent barrier. Wire chicken fences with two-inch opening sizes or smaller are much less harmful to animals while still being just as effective.
