How to Build a Gabion Fence

Dec 14, 2023

Building a gabion wall involves creating a structure using wire baskets filled with rocks or other suitable materials. Gabion walls are commonly used for erosion control, landscaping, and retaining walls.

Gabion Wall

Materials and Tools:
1. Gabion baskets (available in various sizes)
2. Welded wire mesh or wire panels
3. Galvanized wire or wire ties
4. Geotextile fabric (optional)
5. Rocks or suitable filling material
6. Gradienter
7. Shovel
8. Wire cutters
9. Gloves
10. Pliers

Steps:

1. Planning:
- Determine the size and location of the gabion wall.
- Check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits.
- Calculate the number and size of gabion baskets needed.

2. Site Preparation:
- Clear the area of any debris, vegetation, or obstacles.
- Excavate the foundation to ensure a stable base.

3. Assembly of Gabion Baskets:
- Assemble the gabion baskets according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Typically, unfold the baskets and connect the panels using wire ties or spiral binders.
- Use pliers to secure the connections tightly.

4. Placement of Geotextile Fabric (Optional):
- If you're concerned about soil erosion, line the inside of the gabion baskets with geotextile fabric.
- This fabric allows water to pass through while preventing the loss of fine soil particles.

5. Filling the Gabion Baskets:
- Fill the gabion baskets with rocks or other suitable materials.
- Start with larger rocks at the bottom and fill the gaps with smaller rocks.
- Compact the material as you go to ensure stability.

6. Closing the Gabion Baskets:
- Close the gabion baskets securely after filling.
- Use wire ties or spiral binders to fasten the top and any open sides.

7. Stacking and Leveling:
- If building multiple layers, stack the filled gabion baskets on top of each other.
- Use a level to ensure each layer is even and straight.

8. Connect the Baskets:
- Securely connect adjacent baskets using wire ties to create a cohesive structure.

9. Finish and Stabilize:
- Tamp down the filling material within the gabion baskets to eliminate voids.
- Check for levelness and adjust as needed.
- Add a top cap to enhance the appearance and stability of the wall.

10. Maintenance:
- Periodically inspect the gabion wall for signs of erosion or damage.
- Replace any damaged or deteriorated sections promptly.

The stone retaining wall constructed by gabion mesh is very strong and can block foreign intruders and protect the building from external intrusion.
